Venäjä tuottaa Euroopan Unionin öljystä kolmasosan.
Vuonna 2008 on Venäjän öljyntuotanto laskenut 0.5 %, vaikka valtio yrittää löytää uusia öljylähteitä.
Öljy-yhtiö voi myydä tuottamaansa öljyä yhdeksän dollarin osalta barrelia kohden verovapaana. Tämä verovapaus nousee 15 dollariin barrelilta vuoden 2009 alussa.
Venäjän valtio ottaa tällä hetkellä öljy-yhtiön myymästä öljystä 70 dollaria veroa 100 dollarista.
Öljy-yhtiöt kokevat sen ongelmaksi, koska rahaa ei jää riittävästi uusien öljylähteiden hankintaan.
